VERWEILEN by Aitor Ortiz

Many exhibits are “cooked up” in Madrid’s galleries during the early going of the year, clearly on a basis to make them come together during the “fair season”. And in that pack. ARCO is no doubt the leading event.

Some of the trumpeted exhibits include Verweilen, by Spanish photographer Aitor Ortiz, who will be displaying his works at La Sala Canal de Isabel II from Jan. 31 to March 5. This project by the Madrid Community embraces nearly fifty pieces, including snapshots, sculptures and a sound installation that would allow spectators to take a closer look at Ortiz’s newest works and revisit some moments of his professional career.

In line with the space’s industrial character, Verweilen lays bare Aitor Ortiz’s use of the limits between reality and representation based on his mastery of photographic techniques –he relies on them to expand all limits in different directions and make images play into the hands of both reality and virtuality within the same space.

The list of exhibits recently held by Aitor Ortiz (Bilbao, 1971) comprises those at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao (2011) and at the Swedish Museum of Photography (2012). He has nabbed the ABC Photography Prize, the Grand Prize at the Alexandria Biennial in Egypt, the Villa de Madrid Grand Prize in Photography, and many other awards and recognitions.

This exhibit, curated by art critic and publisher David Barro, will remain open from Jan. 31 to March 5.
