Variations in Black: Black Times …Art in Black

Within these black times, there is nothing like amusing ourselves with artworks in which black plays the leading role. Putting on our best face? Well, yes because these are times of frustration and collective crisis, so it’s vital to find shelter in the sublime character of art and artistic creation. Black times …art in black (Tiempos negros…arte en negro).

We are not going to start a technical debate to define whether it is a color or not, because we all perceive it as such. We dress in black (it is the paradigm of elegance, the color of grief and mourning), we name a human race with it, we “turn black” (beyond sun tanned, or angry), we love black movies and black novel, as well as black music and there are people who are addicted to black cigar, there are black days, people that work as black slaves; there are people who even use black magic or avoid black cats and pirates’ flag is black.

This show juxtaposes artists that are very famous among enthusiasts of STOA, through works related to multiple themes: material informalism, conceptualism, hyperrealism, magic realism, surrealism, folk art…, preparatory studies and sketches, figure, landscape, still life… ; several techniques and means are displayed: the traditional charcoal and pencil drawings, along with exquisite inks on parchment paper; subtle watercolors, state-of-the-art acrylics and oil paintings; linen engravings and xylograph engravings sharing space with digital works; mixed techniques and collages…

The exhibition was inaugurated on December 10, 2013, and is going to be opened through January 29, 2014, at STOA Art Gallery, Estepona Port.
