ARTE CONTINUA’s 300 DAYS

Both ARTE CONTINUA, the space that blends Galleria Continua and CNAP, the National Center of Fine Arts (Centro Nacional de las Artes Plasticas), and its first and ongoing exhibition opened on November, 27, 2015. Therefore, to celebrate both the end of the exhibition "Cuarteto" and the Gallery’s first 300 days, on September 24, 2016, ARTE CONTINUA will host a Music, Dance and Theater festival. Its great variety of performers will intermingle and engage in a dialogue both with ARTE CONTINUA and "Cuarteto".

The ongoing exhibition "Cuarteto" grew throughout four succeeding stages: the first, "Anclados en el territorio", featured works by six Cuban artists (Alejandro Campins, Elizabet Cerviño, Carlos Garaicoa, Susana Pilar Delahante Matienzo, Reynier Leyva Novo and José Yaque); the second, "YOU + ME = US", introduced, within the previous exhibition, works by four Italian artists (Loris Cecchini, Ornaghi & Prestinari and Giovanni Ozzola); the third, "Ensemble", presented installations and public interventions by four francophone artists (Etel Adnan, Kader Attia, Daniel Buren and Marthine Pascale Tayou); the fourth, "Cuarteto", showcased the works by Galleria Continua’s Chinese artists (Chen Zhen, Ai Weiwei, Qiu Zhijie, Gu Dexin, Kan Xuan, Sun Yuan & Peng Yu). Hence, "Cuarteto" is not only the ongoing show’s fourth and final stages, but also the four exhibitions’ harmonious combination. The main languages spoken by the artists who participated in these exhibitions mirror Galleria Continua’s headquarters: San Gimignano, Beijing, Les Moulins and La Habana. Last, working within ARTE CONTINUA, the artists discovered its lively neighborhood: Havana’s Chinatown.

The exhibition’s ten months were accompanied by a series of talks by Cuban and international artists and curators. The program, "CHARLAS CONTINUAS", starred: Alejandro Campins, Ornaghi & Prestinari, José Yaque, Elizabet Cerviño, Reynier Leyva Novo, Susana Pilar Delahante Matienzo, Marlon Cusett Portales, Pascale Marthine Tayou, Hamlet Fernandez, Nicolas Bourriaud, Jorge Fernández Torres, Carlos Garaicoa and Lorenzo Fiaschi.

In addition, ARTE CONTINUA hosted a series of contemporary art workshops for kids and teenagers within the framework of the Third Paradise, a project, based in Cuba since 2014, by the artist Michelangelo Pistoletto and Cittadellarte Fondazione Pistoletto in collaboration with Galleria Continua. The workshops, coproduced with Barrio Habana, were held by Pavel García and Erick González León.

On April 30, 2016, the art historians Laura Salas Redondo and Erick Gonzalez León founded within ARTE CONTINUA the Third Paradise Embassy. This prompted a new series of workshops, “CRE-ARTE EN CONTINUA”, conceived for the kids residing in Chinatown. Throughout a dozen summer mornings, children and adolescents took part – self-involvedly – in the workshops’ first module. Through November and December, Chinatown’s primary schools’ students will attend the workshops’ second and third modules.

Finally, the space not only encompasses four exhibitions, works by artists from four continents, but also the history of a peculiar place, Águila de Oro. Built in the '40s, Águila de Oro served as a cinema theater until recent years. On Saturday September 24, from 10 a.m. to Midnight, musicians, actors, dancers and other artists will present their works interacting with the space, the other performers and the audience to release and foster the same creative energy introduced in ARTE CONTINUA 300 days ago.
