Crossroads Art Show. A Selection of Curatorial Projects- Part 1

FRANKLIN EVANS - "readingroomincolour" a site-specific installation

CROSSROADS Art Show will open its doors next week at the Old Truman Brewery in East London.

An international art show, CROSSROADS is a niche fair, with selected curatorial projects and forty-six galleries from abroad that have been handpicked by a team of renowned curators. A fresh, multicultural and accessible fair, CROSSROADS presents the most current artistic trends in a relaxed and convivial setting.

An opportunity to experience the highest quality contemporary art by established and emerging artists, from a multitude of backgrounds and spanning different generations, who share a desire for breaking with the status quo and exploring new realms, new forms and new ideas.

Alongside the participating galleries, there will be a selection of special projects curated by members of our Artistic Committee. The Artistic Committee of CROSSROADS comprises renowned personalities in today’s international art world, including artists and curators from the Guggenheim Museum, the Venice Biennale and Documenta amongst others, such as Eva Ruiz, Pablo León de la Barra, Fernando Bryce, Franklin Evans, Cecilia Jurado, Bruno Leitão, Federico Luger, Marta Ramos-Yzquierdo, Manuela Ribadeneira, Aura Seikkula and Octavio Zaya.

--Below is a preview of some of the selected curatorial projects:--

Eva Ruiz and Eva Mansergas present the original exhibition, Let’s be ironic! Through pieces from the Servais Family Collection, this show explores works by artists who use irony as a tool to arouse new sentiments in their audience. Elmgreen & Dragset approach their socio-political subjects with wit, whilst Carlos Aires addresses the universal theme of disillusionment with sarcasm. The most direct form of irony can be seen in Meyer Peter’s work: a wooden cane carries the logotype of a famous brand of sports footwear followed by the slogan "Just do it." The Cuban artist Adrian Melis, approaches Spain's turbulent political situation through a satiric meme of the Spanish Parliament. The irony shown by a rabbit's tail presented as a trophy, never ceases to amuse.

Video will be presented in a four-day programme conceived by the curatorial team formed by Bruno Leitão and Marta Ramos-Yzquierdo. In The Middle Field, four international independent institutions  - Gasworks (London), VideoBrasil (São Paulo), VideoArt Network (Lagos, Nigeria) and Bar Project (Barcelona) - will offer a perspective on the video creation and video artists that are shown in their venues. The Middle Field will be a meeting point for discussions throughout the event focusing on the role of the exhibitions and their relevance for video art creation.

The fabric of The Old Truman Brewery will be used by the American installation artist Franklin Evans. "readingroomincolor" is a site-specific installation which will use artists’ tape adhered to the walls, floor and ceiling, bubble wrap, old newsprint, un-stretched canvases and press releases from gallery exhibitions. Evan’s work is influenced by the architecture of the space, inspiring the form and space that he, in turn, presents to the viewer to engage with. Evans, who trained as a painter, is interested in materiality and incorporating paintings into an environment, immersing the visitor in a mass of art supplies and materials found in his studio space.

Manuel Díaz Cebrian will bring a selection of fabulous objects, carpets and lighting installations to CROSSROADS Design, inspired by Nature, its colours, organic shapes and textures. Among them are the exquisite objects in brass and bronze by John Bowman and Tanushri Wahi of the India based design studio, The Design Foundry - intricate arrangements of leaves, petals and flowers. Giant insects invade Noemi Kiss’s carpets, alongside geometrical light installations and objects by Arantxa Ximena Rodríguez. Julio Martínez Barreneche ‘s impressive sculptures are made of basalt with natural pigments.

Galleries from Spain, France, Portugal, Italy, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Romania, Bolivia, Colombia, Argentina, Mexico, USA, UAE and UK will allow the public to experience what is happening now in contemporary art around the world and visit the best upcoming international contemporary galleries right on our door step.
