Vincenzo de Cotiis' 'Pop Nouveau'

VINCENZO DE COTIIS | DC 1609 | 2016

POP NOUVEAU | AN EXCLUSIVE SOLO SHOW

Carpenters Workshop Gallery | London is pleased to announce that renowned Italian architect and designer Vincenzo de Cotiis will be showcasing a selection of his works for the first time at the Mayfair gallery. The new inspiring furniture pieces taken from his Progetto Domestico collection will be presented as a solo exhibition called ‘POP NOUVEAU’.

IDYLLIC FORMS

By using an innovative appropriation of salvaged and reclaimed materials, Vincenzo De Cotiis’s designs are at the same time lavish and sparse, rich and raw, with primacy of material and texture over form and function.

The gallery will be exhibiting pieces that include a large silver-plated brass wall cabinet, a contorted neon-light chandelier in tubular brass, as well as two new wall lamps, a floor lamp, two side tables and a new dining table.

The boundary between free interpretation and a select historical memory generates idyllic forms in this exhibition.

Inspired by the artistic movements of the beginning of the 20th century, a Romantic spirit confronts an innovative Realism in Vincenzo De Cotiis’s latest designs. His influences arise not as style restrictions but as regenerative creations.

REBELLION & LIBERATION

Two themes circulate amongst the exhibition:

Pop – as a rebellion against stereotypes and Nouveau – the liberation from mechanised forms.

Vincenzo De Cotiis creates transformative and organic pieces that surpass both time and beauty with coffee tables that resemble neo-romantic pools of water, contorted metal light fixtures shaped like twisted branches and table bases rooted like stumps of trees.

The artist references and reinterprets art with just as much emphasis on the design process as the end product.

As a result Vincenzo De Cotiis creates unique, contemporary and highly aesthetic pieces that simultaneously work as pieces of furniture as well as sculptural art.

PROGETTO DOMESTICO COLLECTION | A PERFECT IMPERFECTION

The collection ‘Progetto Domestico’, created by Vincenzo De Cotiis, is a reinterpretation of every day objects with a new aesthetic touch. Contemporary techniques of manufacturing combine with experimental procedures that help shape processed materials with recycled parts. This ongoing interiors project offers the possibility of understanding and witnessing everyday objects in a spotlight that outshines its original purpose. Characterized by materials worn and deformed by time that come to life again in unexpected shapes, the pieces evoke luxurious industrialisation.

This recurrent theme is found in the appearance of surfaces and manual treatment of materials such as fibreglass, wax, leather, brass and iron to create new textures. The visual experience merges with the tactile, creating unique pieces, produced strictly in limited editions.

Describing his work as a “perfect imperfection”, Vincenzo De Cotiis accomplishes this outlook through a series of binarisms, mixing: ‘old’ with ‘new’, ‘precious’ with ‘industrial’ as well as combining ‘rough’ and ‘raw’ textures with ‘smooth’ and ‘polished’ surfaces. He blends both past and present to create transformative and organic pieces.

Deconstruction, reconstruction and re-appropriation of used materials ensure that the origins of his work are often blurred, resulting in a wonderfully new aesthetic that also retains a certain authenticity.

Recycled materials undergo experimental procedures with emphasis on industrial uniqueness in which elements conform to the concept of reuse and context replacement. The leitmotif is the appearance of surfaces such as the hand treatment of textures manually achieved on different objects and materials (fiberglass, wax, leather, brass and iron) creating a new tactile and visual experience.

ABOUT | VINCENZO DE COTIIS

Vincenzo De Cotiis Architects, a Milan-based architecture and design studio, is internationally renowned for creating sophisticated interiors and experimental design. With over 30 years of experience in design, De Cotiis’s aesthetic is both lavish and spare, rich and raw with primacy of material over form.

Referencing and reinterpreting art with just as much emphasis on the process of designing as the end product, his spaces and furniture verge upon sculpture. Perfect imperfection, achieved through innovative deconstruction, reconstruction and reappropriation of salvaged textiles, metals, wood, leather, stone and fiberglass is what constitutes De Cotiis’ original style.

Origins are often abstracted but age and use are always left vaguely visible as VDA finds beauty in the patina of life, demonstrated in his architecture and interior projects for private and commercial clients around the world.

With a scope of architecture projects ranging from private homes to hotels, restaurants and retail, VDA’s work remains dedicated to materials and tactility. Residential clients span Italy, the UK and China, while hospitality projects include the Straf Hotel and T’à Bistrot in Milan, Le Chiavi d’Oro restaurant in Arezzo and residences in progress in the Upperhills development of Shenzhen, China.

In retail, De Cotiis has developed the aesthetic of Italy’s most important multibrand stores, such as Antonia and Excelsior in Milan and Rome as well as Krizia and Aesop in Milan, Illummen’s floor in Copenhagen, Canudilo’s 01 Men in Guangzhou and most recently the Ms Min boutique in Shanghai.

CARPENTERS WORKSHOP GALLERY
COLLECTIBLE DESIGN TODAY

Carpenters Workshop Gallery produces and exhibits functional sculptures by international rising and already established artists and designers going outside their traditional territories of expression.

Actively involved in the research and production of the limited edition works exhibited, the gallery’s choices are guided by the research of an emotional, artistic and historical relevance; a relevance that appears as an evidence.

The gallery relies on the partnership of childhood friends, Julien Lombrail and Loic Le Gaillard. They first opened a space in London’s Chelsea in 2006 in a former carpenter’s workshop; they then followed with a second space in Mayfair in 2008.

The opening of a 600 square metre space in Paris in 2011 in the heart of Le Marais district, an address steeped in history as it was previously occupied by the Galerie de France for several decades, was a return to their roots.

2015 marked a major turning point for the gallery with the opening of Carpenters Workshop | Roissy, a unique 8,000 meter square space dedicated to artistic research and development, bringing together the elite of artisans, an homage to the French heritage of ‘Arts Décoratifs’.

Carpenters Workshop Gallery | New York is the latest step in the gallery’s remarkable development. This new space confirms the leadership and dominant position of the gallery in today’s international territory of art and design.

Starting September 2016 and until June 2017, the gallery will be celebrating its ten year anniversary, with a special program of exhibitions, events and many surprises dedicated to a decade at the forefront of collectible design. It will also be a turning point for the Mayfair gallery as it moves to a bigger space, just next door at 4 Albemarle Street, which will give it the capacity to expand the curatorial possibilities of its exhibitions.
