We are: the art that heals us

The 34th edition of Fiesta del Fuego in Santiago de Cuba came to reaffirm what we already had confirmed in the last Romerias de Mayo (May Pilgrimages) in Holguin: The Somos project, led by Master Alberto Lescay Merencio and that involves his two sons --- Albertico, musician, and Alexander, painter ---, stands as one of the major cultural events this year, and will undoubtedly be of obligatory reference when recounting the outstanding event that occurred with the visual arts on the Island. In Somos all attests to the creative force that invades not only the author of the monument to bighorn and the square that honors Antonio Maceo in the called capital of the Caribbean--- without discussion among the most renowned representatives monumental arts in Cuba ---, but also to their young stems. Sculptures, paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, jazz ... are of an artistic and conceptual forcefulness so thrilling.

But, what is Somos? The pillar of the family sees it as a project That "aims to join wills, the new generations with the consecrated; white with black, yellow with red, all working for the culture, art that feeds spirituality, which is good for us, which heals us. "

In the case of Alejandro, who considers himself essentially as a painter, but in this exhibition wanted to prove himself with engraving and photography to "look for other purposes, exploit new opportunities," he emphasizes that the surprising exhibition "did not come to attract all eyes towards us or try to find a place within national art, but to get even closer spiritually, because there is nothing more spiritual than art. So it is not a family project, but one that overlaps friends, that only wants us to feel all right ".

"We realized that creating together is what we like; hence we are open to all possibilities of collaboration, as with the Ojos project, the errant sculptures, directed by Alcides Carlos González Tití, who has accompanied us both in the opening of the exhibition in Romerias de Mayo (May Pilgrimages), as in the Caribbean Festival of Santiago. Our goal? To get closer, the exchange of experiences, knowledge, to create, to fill us with good energy, and to do and do to ourselves something good. "

Albertico, the firstborn, who was born while Lescay was studying at the prestigious Repin Academy, Leningrad (1973-1979), in the former Soviet Union, does not want either to hide his immense satisfaction "for being part of this wonderful artistic and  spiritual event, in which different artistic concepts merge organically to promote absolute beauty. Whenever the public responds to our call experience is unforgettable, because Somos started with a huge ethical, human commitment.

"We are the natural result of what has been happening between my father and us since we were kids. As a rule, the exhibitions he prepares are opened with a comprehensive, interactive, or multicultural event: Dance, theater, visual art or music is always present".

Hence Albertico does not feel he is doing something strange, weird, or unusual. This explains why his compositions in the style of Invasion which he sings with his Formas project, give the feeling that were designed so that the pieces acquire a superior, almost divine and magical dimension.

There are pieces that classify within that very select group destined to works of art, which, as emphasized by the same Alberto Lescay, is strangely achieved; because a state of grace is needed and although he does not admit it because of his genuine modesty, knows well.

The best part is, perhaps, that he does not believe it. So he will continue wondering who he is and with what purpose he came to this world and, aware of his strengths and weaknesses, he will continue building a lifestyle. "A way in which I can be happy to make others happy as far as possible".

"I have always had the need --- which I discovered over time --- to carry out social projects, especially in the world of culture, which will also concern other colleagues, other artists. Thus the Caguayo Foundation was born, to which I dedicate much time and lots of love, the same time I spend with equal devotion to creation, because I am happy to do things well.  Bungling, rudeness and dirty hurt me, both the ethical and aesthetic. This explains why I am a beautician, passionate about beauty. Beauty is the primary goal of my actions. "
