Cuba: 13th Havana Art Biennial Postponed Due to Hurricane

The National Council of Plastic Arts of Cuba and the Contemporary Art Center Wilfredo Lam decided to postpone for 2019 the 13th Havana Art Biennial, said today various institutions in the country.

The document posted by the website Cubarte indicated that due to the serious damage left by the hurricane Irma in the cultural institutions in the country, the allocation of resources for the recovery for the rest of the year and 2018 was deeply discussed.

Along with the 13th Havana Biennial, the statement indicated that it was necessary to change the date of various planned events.

According to the ministry of Culture, the hurricane Irma damaged 287 cultural institutions in Cuba, and also that reconstruction works have already started in those sites.

Meanwhile, the Association of Plastic Artists of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) expressed understanding and support for the decision.

The association Hermano Saiz (AHS) joined the statement issued by UNEAC to express its support for the adjustment carried out by the ministry of Culture in the plan of events for 2018, due to the recent damage caused by the strong hurricane Irma.
