The eighth edition of the Biennial of Visual Arts from Central America, BAVIC, opened its doors to the public on January 15 at Panama City’s Museum of Contemporary Art.
The artists chosen to represent the countries from the region were: Alvaro Gomez, Roberto Guerrero, Elena Wen, John Juric, Paulina Velazquez and Travis Johns and Carolina Parra and Xavier Villafranca from Costa Rica; Luis Cornejo, Rodrigo Dada, Melissa Guevara, Kabistan Mauritius, Eduardo Lytton and Danny Zavaleta from El Salvador; Marlov Barrios, Menchu Eick, Norman Morales, Joshua Romero, Pliny Villagran and La Torana Collective from Guatemala; Lucy Argueta, Fernando Cortez, Lester Rodriguez, Jorge Oqueli, Cesar Chinchilla and Gabriel Vallecillo from Honduras; Patricia Belli, Alejandro de la Guerra, Maruca Gomez, Erika Mierisch, Ricardo Miranda Huezo and Colectivo veinti3 from Nicaragua; as well as Jose Castrellon, Maria Raquel Cochez, Francisco Malaga, Darien Montañez and Jhafis Quintero from Panama.
Beyond the exhibition, the Biennial included a theoretical meeting titled De facto: acciones sin limites, on the strategies, challenges and impact of social transformation projects through art in Central America, the Caribbean and Mexico. The last one was the guest country, with such representatives as artists Carlos Amorales and Ruben Gutierrez and curators Jose Garcia and Paola Santoscoy.
BAVIC receives contributions from the private sector and each edition visits a different capital of Central America. It is sponsored by Paiz Foundation (Guatemala), Promerica Banco de Honduras and El Salvador, Ortiz-Gurdian Foundation (Nicaragua), among other.
The Biennial can be visited through February 18.
