Art and Anthropology

With the curatorship of Jean de Loisy, president of Tokyo´s Palais, an exhibition in Caixa Forum Madrid proposes the merge between remains of ancient ritual practices and contemporary art. Maestros del caos. Artistas y chamanes was inaugurated on Feb. 5 and its spirit is ahead of the carnival.

Important anthropologic and ethnographic collections lent objects, costumes and representations for this exhibition, elements that coexist in the space with installations created by today’s visual artists. The showcase invites to get to know the common language between both of them, proposes an exploration trip to learn about the myths that explain the exhibited objects and the rites that are practiced with them, sacred and profanes as well.

Works from yesterday and today explore states of the body, the trance, the party, the mysticism. That’s the reason why a mask from the 19th century, from Sri Lanka, used to protect pregnant women, is contrasted with a video produced 1975 in which American choreographer Anna Halprin teaches how to “push” the disease out of the body through the dance.
