Latin American Art in Phoenix

Phoenix’s Museum of Art witnessed on Wednesday Feb. 6 the inauguration of an exhibition that explores the most refreshing trends of contemporary visual production in Latin America from Diane and Bruce Halle Collection’s funds. Order, Chaos, and the Space Betweenincludes over fifty pieces created by authors from Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela, such as Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Helio Oiticica and Doris Salcedo, among other internationally acclaimed figures.

The showcase includes pieces created after 1945, and –just like the collection– proposes viewers the true recognition of what Latin America is from its art, leaving common places and preconceived ideas aside. This educative purpose is complemented by lectures to be given by artists, as well as a display program.

The exhibition counted on the curatorship of Beverly Adams, curator of the collection, and Vanessa Davidson, curator of Latin American art. Both curators edited a catalogue that includes texts written by Robert Storr, artist, art critic and curator; Edward J. Sullivan, among others.

One of the most attractive pieces, by Carlos Amorales (Mexico), was specially set up by the artist: 30,000 paper bugs guide visitors through the exhibition conceived for Phoenix Art Museum.
