Oye, Mira!: Reflective Approaches in Contemporary Latin American Video Art

Oye, Mira!: Reflective Approaches in Contemporary Latin American Video Art opened on April 19 at San Francisco Art Institute’s Walter and McBean Galleries. Curated by artist Tony Labat, a pioneer of video art, the display includes a selection of pieces produced by Latin American artists such as: Edgardo Aragon (Mexico); Alexandre Arrechea (Cuba); Miguel Calderon (Mexico); Felipe Dulzaides (Cuba); Sergio De La Torre (Mexico); Humberto Diaz (Cuba); Ana Teresa Fernandez (Mexico); Luis Garciga (Cuba); Claudia Joskowicz (Bolivia); leonardogillesfleur (Argentina); Julio Cesar Morales (Mexico); Yoshua Okon (Mexico); Eamon Ore-Giron (Peru); Amapola Prada (Peru) and Maya Watanabe (Peru). The curator has included artists who use video as a reflection and observation tool. By exploring identity relations in terms of place, history or memory, these artists play a remarkable role as mediators on their geopolitical space, inserting their works in their environment as well as in the possible confluence between culture and daily life. Taken from each artist’s perception and experience, the concepts of materiality, shape and content make up a whole. With works created over the past 12 years, the exhibition gathers a wide range of productions that include video loop, video installations, etc. The participation of the audience will be a comprehensive part of the display through an interactive video café and performances throughout the cutting-ribbon session. The exhibition will remain open through June 8, 11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. (Thursdays until 7:00 p.m.) San Francisco Art Institute’s Walter and McBean Galleries. Source: Press release
