The La Virreina Center of Imatge is presenting This Is Not a Love Song, an exhibit that intends to lay out the genealogy of ties between pop music and video arts from the 1960s to date, stressing on those moments in which both expressions got mutual feedbacks and verged on experimentation, utopia and political unrest.
Since the 1960s, several generations of leading artists have embraced elements tied up to attitudes and the imagery of pop music, cozying up with that genre to such an extent that some of them even wound up collaborating with different rock bands and recording their own albums. In the same breath, musicians and members of flagship rock bands from the past couple of decades were educated in art schools before turning professionally to music.
Under this vast grid and bearing in mind that the origins of video art run side by side with those of pop music, the project is divided in two sections: Pop & Video Art. Shared Genealogies, that gathers over thirty significant pieces from the history of video art and experimental filmmaking from the 1960s all the way to 2013. That compilation features artworks by Andy Warhol, Nam June Paik, Yayoi Kusama, Dan Graham, Tony Oursler, Vito Acconci, John Baldessari, Christian Marclay, Douglas Gordon, Candice Breitz, Jeremy Deller, Mark Leckey, Jon Mikel Euba and Largen & Bread, among others; andMusic for Your Eyes. Visual and Esthetic Arts of Video Clips,which encompasses a grand tour around the history of music videos as it reviews the works of some of the most influential creators of all time and their ties with the visual arts and contemporary cinema. That includes the work of Andy Warhol, Tony Oursler, Judith Barry, Robert Longo, Joan Morey, Damien Hirst, Ana Laura Aláez, Carles Congost, Pipilotti Rist, Rodney Graham, Dara Birnbaum and Joseph Beuys.
