Carlos Bogni Reinterprets Religious Tokens, Documents at MAC Parque Central

A cheeky glance at religious tokens and documents will be presented by artist Carlos Bogni within the framework of the Quien Como Dios (Who Like God) exhibit, open from June 28 to Sept. 1, at the MAC Parque Forestal. Carlos Bogni, famous for his large-scale paintings, is penciled in as a member of the 80’s Generation, rubbing elbows with such artists as Mario Soro and Arturo Duclos. Unlike his peers, though, his work shows a heftier conceptual character through pieces that suggest a new relationship between visual works and texts. Biblical references, paradises and hells are combined with pornography and violence in this exhibit in which images get new meanings following the blend with poetry-rich texts. Thus, “the image does not evoke or quotes the word, but it invokes it,” the artist says. Large-scale oils, photo collages and digital printings are part of this exposition inspired in texts and myths linked to Christianity, Buddhism and Islamism. These recent works are showcased alongside pieces that refer to previous artworks, featuring literary texts and realistic-style oils the artist clings to in some sort of nonstop remaking. “Bogni seems to be one of those artists who, through the years, come up with the same work in several variations. In his case, the collage presents a permanent rearrangement of the elements: texts, icons, tokens, drawings,” writes Roberto Merino in the Quien Como Dios catalog, launched during the grand opening of the exhibition.
