Youth celebrates Romerias de Mayo in Cuban Province of Holguin

Holguin, Cuba.- Cuban singer Raúl Paz gave a concert last night for the opening of the Romerías de Mayo, festival of tradition and modernity which 24th edition will run in this city until the May 8.

At General Calixto García Revolution Square, the artist displayed his talent as a prelude to the inaugural parade of the largest event organized by the Hermanos Saíz Association in Cuba.

The event, which coincides with the 2017 International Tourism Fair, will be attended by more than 200 foreign artists from various demonstrations from around thirty countries.

Dedicated to the young rebels of the world, the leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro and Ernesto Che Guevara, the meeting will once again have the contest ¨Memoria Nuestra¨ (Our Memory) as a theoretical event and backbone of the festival.

Renowned figures from the Cuban musical scene will join the festival of young art, including Havana D'Primera Orchestra and singer-songwriters Eduardo Sosa, Gerardo Alfonso and Tony Ávila.

This time the program foresees a day dedicated to Canada, with the presence of North American artists such as the singer-songwriter Frances D'amour, rock group Les Respectables and university students from Nova Scotia.

Musicians, theatergoers, researchers, dancers, writers, painters and cultural promoters coincide for a week in Holguin province, a stage of great concerts and performance, simultaneous exhibitions, workshops and public dance in parks, squares and open spaces.

The cultural event revives a rite born on May 3, 1790 when Father Antonio Alegria placed a wooden cross on top of the Cerro Bayado, today Loma de la Cruz, in order to celebrate a Hispanic religious tradition.

That is why after the inauguration in each edition of the Romerías, a group of young people climb to the top of the elevation, 275 meters above sea level, with the replica of an aboriginal ax, symbol of the city of Holguin.
