By Jeniffer Rodriguez Martinto

Havana, Cuba.- The 9th International Design Congress, FORMA 2017, began on Wednesday in Havana with discussions on the challenges of the designers before the urgent development of technologies.

Sergio Davila Urrutia, of the Autonomous Metropolitana University of Mexico said that the applications and software have provoked a massive access to tools that allows the creation of sketches and projects without the need of looking for a professional in the field.

He explained that it is becoming easier to use the technology in 3D and generative design that can facilitate the elaboration of automatic forms starting from the introduction of data in a system.

Davila Urrutia highlighted that it is imperative for the designers to assume a critical posture before such situation and look for alternative areas of development.

Other issues that were debated in the event held at Havana’s Convention Center was the state of the professional competition of industrial designers to promote fashion in the current Cuban context.

Professor of the Higher Institute of Design (ISDI), Yamara Arcia Serrano affirmed that they are enough in the country due to the years of limited attention in the area of textiles.

The new economic context of the country demands the recovery of the productive capacities which include detecting needs and fashion designers in addition to adapting to the reality of the conditions of the national industry, she said.

Claudia Correa Garcia highlighted that from the field it is possible to contribute to confronting gender violence, an aspect with edges like the imposition of sexual preference and mistreatment towards women and girls.

The speaker commented on an experience of the project “0 Violence”, by students from ISDI in favor of educating others on the issue and expressed in finished products like public campaigns.

Under the slogan “Diseño ConCiencia” (Conscience Design), FORMA 2017 is underway until Friday with the participation of close to 400 delegates from 17 countries.
