Alfredo Volpi. La poétique de la couleur

The NMNM presents this major exhibition dedicated to Alfredo Volpi (1896 - 1988), one of the most beloved Brazilian artists of the 20th century.

The first retrospective of the artist in a public institution outside Brazil, Alfredo Volpi. La poétique de la couleur features more than 70 works retracing the career of this self-taught painter whose fascination with the early Italian Renaissance, with artists like Matisse and Morandi, and with popular culture helped him to win the Best National Prize at the 2nd São Paolo Biennale in 1953.

Starting from the landscapes and 'cityscapes' of the 1940s to the works of the '50s, '60s and '70s in which the same subjects are transformed into colorful geometric compositions, the exhibition explores the poetic 'algorithm' that allowed Volpi to paint what critic Herbert Read called "the shapes and colors of Brazilian modern architecture."
