Pierre Cardin. Sculptures utilitaires 1970- 1975

Pierre Cardin is famous as a couturier, but he is also one of the great figures of 20th century design. In 2018, Sotheby's will reveal this lesser-known side of his talent with an exhibition at its Paris gallery from 17 to 24 January.

In the 1970s, the inventor of futuristic fashion turned his attention to the design of lacquered furniture. He collaborated with the greatest artists and designers of the time, including Francesco Bocola, François Cante-Pacos, Serge Manzon, Giacomo Passera, Maria Pergay, Claude Prevost, Boris Tabacoff, Paolo Leoni, Yonel Lebovici and Christian Adam.

In the exhibition at Sotheby's Paris, 25 objects, chairs and lamps–elegant, instantly recognizable pieces which Cardin called "sculptures utilitaires”–will represent this magnificent body of work that today is highly sought after.
