ARTE LAGUNA PRIZE: launches a new award dedicated to sustainability

A new synergy dedicated to sustainability and art has started.

The 11th Arte Laguna Prize launches the award "RRR Paper (Reuse Recycle Reduce) as Art and Design", promoted and developed with the Archives of Sustainability of Ca' Foscari University Venice and implemented with the support of Comieco (National Consortium for the Salvaging and Recycling of Cellulose-based Packaging).

A commission composed of the Prize curator Igor Zanti, Professor Giorgio Conti, Scientific Director of the Archives of Sustainability and the representatives of Comieco will choose the best submission that enhances paper/cardboard and cellulose packaging as part of the RRR strategies (Reuse, Recycle, Reduce).

The winner will be awarded a prize of 3,000 euro during the opening ceremony of the finalists exhibition of the Arte Laguna Prize at the Arsenale of Venice on March 25th, 2017.

The award is open to artists, designers, photographers, video artists and performers who are expected high originality and creativity in dealing with the proposed theme. The commission hopes that the Award is not simply declined as a "new aesthetics" of recycling, but rather expects the unexpected from the entrants, since as argued by Jean Dubuffet: "Art doesn't go to sleep in the bed made for it".

Prof. Conti explains that this collaboration has the aim of creating an innovative and profitable relationship between the academic world and the world of production, thanks to the support of Comieco, and Art, in the name of shared eco-ethical and aesthetic principles. A new model of sustainable development cannot do without the strategic and creative support from the artists.

PARTNERS:

The Archives of Sustainability (ArcSOS) of Ca' Foscari University Venice are a center for the documentation, education, research and dissemination relating to the issues of integrated sustainability: eco-ethical, economical and socio-cultural. The institutional representatives of ArcSOS are Professors Giorgio Conti and Guido Perin. The ArcSOS organize meetings, conferences, debates, workshops, and promote exhibitions and events nationally and internationally (www.unive.it/arcsos).

Comieco is the National Consortium for the Salvaging and Recycling of Cellulose-based Packaging, founded in 1985 by a group of companies in the paper industry who were interested in promoting the concept of "sustainable packaging", which became a National Consortium as part of the CONAI consortium system for the management of packaging with the entry into force of Legislative Decree 22/97. The main purpose of the Consortium, through an incisive policy of prevention and development of recycling of paper and cardboard, is to achieve the recycling of waste paper and cellulose packaging required by European legislation (Directive 2004/12/EC, which integrated and amended the Directive 94/62/EC). Comieco is among the founders of the newly formed National Council for Green Economy, composed of 53 company organizations, and formed in February 2013 to foster the development of green economy in Italy (www.comieco.org).

Entries must be received by November 16, 2016.
