The sculpture that seduces in the Old Square of Havana

Hundreds of visitors stop to admire a unique sculpture located in the Plaza Vieja in the Historic Center of the capital of Cuba. It is the relationship of a woman and a cock with her destiny and perhaps with the life of the city itself. Established in May 2013, it is the work of the National Prize of Plastic Arts, Roberto Fabelo.

She is totally shaved, naked, with heels, she carries a fork like a spear and majestically mounts a rooster. This is the woman who comes to the pass at one end of the Plaza Vieja, the third created in the city and one of the most populous in the Historic Center of Havana.

But it is not just any woman. She is a tamer, a warrior but in a serene pose, natural and without fears. And for many, it is the representation of a city - Havana - that has managed to overcome the vicissitudes of each century, of each era. This woman represents the Cuban, the city, the culinary traditions of an Island and is the character of its people.

Roberto Fabelo, one of the most important artists of the island, does not give up his symbolism. Those who know and follow his work know that the rooster is very recurrent for him. Image of gallantry, manliness. But this time, a woman dominates and takes control.

Several years ago, the artist and the Historian of the City of Havana, Dr. Eusebio Leal Spengler, had valued the idea of locating a sculpture of Fabelo that was a mermaid torso. A work that had to do with the proximity of the Historic Center to the sea. But such an initiative did not happen. Instead, the creator made the figure of a woman on the rooster and asked to donate it to Havana. Initially, the figure was modeled in clay and cast in bronze, in the United States.

Later it was located in one of the ends of the square and it was a very successful project. The place that is today an original cultural and leisure center in the city, now bears the imprint of a Cuban artist, renowned inside and outside of Cuba.

Those who visit the mythical square of Havana will not only be able to visit the Fototeca de Cuba, the Dark Chamber, the Wallonia Showcase or the Cards Museum. Now you will find one of the most imposing sculptures in Havana.
