SWAB 2011: FAIR SUMMONING

Swab: small piece of an absorbent material attached to the end of a stick or wire.

In 2006, the Barcelona Fair of Contemporary Art was founded as an initiative by the Diezy7 private collection and with the support of gallery owners Leo Koenig (Leo Koenig, INC, Nueva York), Fred Mann (Fred LTD, London) and Marta Moriarty (Vacio, 9, Madrid). The event took place for the first time the following year and provided the city with a fair of paramount significance at that time to round up its cultural fabric.

A new edition of Swab –summoned for May 2011- intends to showcase the emerging contemporary art from around the world and become a launching pad for the latest breed of young gallery owners from both Spain and overseas. Thus, from May 26 thru 29, the Italian Pavilion of the Barcelona Fairgrounds will reel in 44 galleries from around the globe which have been convened not only to join the general program but also to attend a new commissioned section: Art Projects. Laurent Fiévet and Silvia Guerra, from the Lab'bel, Laboratoire Artistique du groupe Bel, will be in charge of this particular space made up of half a dozen galleries that will feature works by young artists that bear watching closely. The main selection committee is made up of gallery owners Christian Ehrentraut (Christian Ehrentraut, Berlin), Kristian Jarmuschek (Kristian Jarmuschek + Partner’s, Berlin), Fred Mann (Fred Ltd, London), Miguel Angel Sanchez (ADN, Barcelona) and Suzanne Tarasieve (Galerie Suzanne Tarasieve, Paris), as well as commissioner Javier Panera (director of the DA2 Museum in Salamanca).

The fair’s VIP programming –coordinated by Monica Alvarez Careaga (AC2. Santander, Lisbon), will give guest collectors and news media an exciting vision of the artistic creation currently produced and shown in Barcelona. In the same breath, the Swab Off Program will colonize a number of public places around town with several proposals. Swab is endorsed by the Barcelona City Hall and features MANGO as its top sponsor.

In last year’s edition, Latin American galleries were represented by Galería Habana from Cuba and Pabellón 4 from Argentina. The 2011 summoning was rolled out on Oct. 30 and the deadline to hand in works will remain in place through Feb. 15, 2011.
