The International Film Festival of Gibara reaffirms its commitments

The 15th edition of the Gibara International Film Festival will take place between July 7 and 13 in that beautiful place in Holguin, which is called Villa Blanca.

It was known at a press conference held in Havana that the contest featured more than 300 films, of which 95 will be exhibited, in the sections: Contest. Parallel and institutional samples. Special presentations, and Tributes.

To the Lucia Award, which evokes the emblematic film by Humberto Solás, 64 works will be screened in the sections: fiction feature films (9); fiction shorts (15); animation shorts (10); long documentaries (8); short documentaries (8); cinema in construction (9), and unpublished scripts (15).

The juries of all the categories are made up of prestigious professionals of the seventh art of Cuba and the world; they are presided by Fernando Pérez (long and short fiction); Lizette Vila (long and short documentaries, animation and video art); Vicente Monsonis, from Argentina, (unpublished scripts and films under construction), and the press tribunal that will evaluate fiction feature films has as its president the film critic Joel del Río.

The International Film Festival of Gibara (FIC Gibara), will pay tribute to the films Fresa y Chocolate (Cuba, 1994), of the Tomás Gutiérrez Alea-Juan Carlos Tabío binomial; Tango feroz, (Argentina, 1993), by Marcelo Piñeyro, and the remarkable filmmaker Agnès Varda, the only woman of the Nouvelle Vague (New French Wave), who died on March 29 at the age of 91.

Regarding the exchange that the event propitiates among Cuban filmmakers, actors and technicians with those from other latitudes, it was reported that the participation of representatives of 25 nations is expected, among them Argentina, Spain, Colombia, Germany, Holland, Russia, China, Iran and Kenya.

Once again the FIC Gibara shows itself in its inclusive and diverse nature in terms of embracing the rest of the manifestations of art and thought.

In this way, a set of theoretical panels have been organized that will focus attention on issues such as: Cuban Cinema: challenges of the 21st Century; Technologies and audiovisual; Insumisas: the look of gender, and Ibero-American Cinema: the filmmakers speak.

The International Film Festival of Gibara FIC Gibara, began to evolve for good from its own start in April 2003 when it was created by the filmmaker Humberto Solás; much has changed since then, but its foundational commitments that appear in the Poor Cinema Manifesto remain unscathed: "to legitimize (...) the versatility of styles, legacies and purposes of an art that will not be the patrimony of a single country or of a single one conception of the world».
