Laurent Grasso, Su-Mei Tse and Samson Young at the 21st Biennale of Sydney

Edouard Malingue Gallery is delighted to announce that Laurent Grasso (France, 1972), Su-Mei Tse (Luxembourg, 1973) and Samson Young (Hong Kong, 1979), have been selected to participate in the 21st Biennale of Sydney.

Curated by Mami Kataoka of Mori Art Museum, Japan, the Biennale, titled ‘SUPERPOSITION: Art of Equilibrium and Engagement’, has a focus on global interaction and critical discourse. Drawing on the current global social-political situation, where theories of politics, culture, ideology and art are in constant conflict, the 37 participating artists work towards an understanding of how opposing views can become engaged in a state of equilibrium.

Laurent Grasso’s work embraces a complex conceptual practice that delves into science, mythology and supernatural phenomena to weave a research-filled narrative. Grasso engages our notions of time and locale, creating work that tests our knowledge in a manner tending on the epistemological.

Su-Mei Tse’s work draws us into contemplation of our sense of place, self and time, using the universal language of music and visual metaphors to suggest trains of thought but ultimately allow us to formulate our own. Tse’s practice is a complete multi-sensory experience that plunges one into a state of suspension.

Channeling his attunement to melody by pushing it’s formalist boundaries, Samson Young creates innovative cross-media artworks. Multicultural paradigms, weaved into a symphony of image and sound, are at the heart of Young’s practice, which utilises the components of music – sound, beat, rhythm – to flesh out global issues surrounding topical conflicts which have affected our past and present.
