Literature and Art, Once Again

There’s no doubt there’s a historically prolific linkage between art and literature; sometimes complementing semantically, though also as stand-along creative catalysts of certain experiences that might as well be expressed in either one or both.

Ya se leer (I Can Read Now) was recently closed in Havana. This exhibit zeroes in on different interactive ways between texts and images within the contemporary visual arts. Curators Elvia Rosa Castro, Sandra Contreras, Ibis Hernandez and Margarita Sanchez showed a remarkable list of authors after skimming through the most outstanding elements of each and every creator in this particular topic.

At the same time, other Latin American intellectuals insist in laying bare this strategy. On July 12-28 this year, the Seminar on Contemporary Art and Writing, organized by Uruguayan author Eduardo Milan, will be held in Mexico.

The main objective of this meeting is to generate discussions and debates on the contemporary art and for that reason all intellectuals from both sectors have been summoned. Through June 24 all requests can be emailed to escolares@lacoleccionjumex.org, plus a résumé and a sample of the work that should exceed ten pages.

Eduardo Milan was born in Rivera, Uruguay, in 1952 and is the author of several fiction books and essays, such as Una cierta mirada (1989), Resistir. Insistencias sobre el presente poético (1994), Justificación material (2004), Un ensayo sobre poesía (2006), Sobre la capacidad de dar sombra de ciertos signos como un sauce (2007) and Veredas a los modos de un bosque (2009). He’s also the author of an anthology on Latin American poetry entitled Pulir huesos. Veintitrés poetas latinoamericanos, 1950-1965 (2007), and Las ínsulas extrañas. Antología de poesía en lengua española (1950-2000) (2002).

The Seminar on Contemporary Art and Writing comes into being within the framework of the Destello (Colección Jumex) exhibit in collaboration with Casa Refugio Citlaltépetl. It’s curated by Osvaldo Sanchez who has gathered artists from different generations and locations, like Louise Bourgeois, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Francis Alÿs and Ana Mendieta, among others. This major exhibit will remain open through Sept. 30 this year.
