Major Activities to Celebrate Santiago de Cuba’s 500th Anniversary Announced

On July 25, Santiago de Cuba will have been present in the heart of Cuba for five centuries and that’s why senior authorities of the Government and Party in the territory have organized a program of activities to be carried out on July 23 – 26, so the people and national and foreign visitors can enjoy it.
 
The list of actions of celebrate the 500th anniversary of this city includes a parade by Sports Glories from Antonio Maceo Revolution Square to Santa Ifigenia Cemetery, to be done in the morning; as well as the Cry Festival, one of the most genuine expressions of popular culture in Santiago.
 
Starting at 9 a.m. Mars Square will become a stage for children companies and at 6 p.m. several couples are going to swear everlasting love at the 500th Anniversary Wedding.
 
Enthusiasts of fine art in the territory can go to the space of the Cuban Artisan Artist Association (ACAA is the Spanish acronym), nestled in Heredia Street between Carniceria and San Felix streets, and participate in the expo – sale that is taking place there.
 
The following publications are going to be launched at Antonio Maceo Revolution Square in the morning of the 24th: “5 Siglos de Historia”, “Santiago Siempre Santiago”, “Cronicas de Santiago de Cuba” and the special monographic of “Excelencias” magazine. Cespedes Park will host at night a cultural gala to pay tribute to this southeastern city’s five centuries of existence. Later on, Santiago 500 Aniversario Rum is slated to be launched and, by the end on the evening, La Alameda seafront will be the perfect viewpoint for “Fascination 500” fireworks show.
 
“500 Anniversary” Solemn Assembly will be held on July 25, as well as the stamping of a commemorative seal. On the other hand, Santiago’s carnival is going to be officially declared National Heritage.
 
According to the tradition, in the morning of Saint Ana the pioneers are going to stage the Assault to Moncada Barracks, which presently stands as 26 de Julio School City, so as to celebrate the 62nd anniversary of this important heroic deed. Afterwards, the congas of the irrepressible city will gather at popular Tivoli neighborhood and the people will dance with the rhythm of the Chinese cornet and drums.
 
Macuba theater group, with artistic direction by Fatima Patterson, is going to premiere “Mamaracho” play. Cuba’s National Circus will be in charge of closing the official activities for the 500th anniversary of the foundation of Santiago de Cuba.
