"La madre de todas las artes" exhibit at the Wifredo Lam soon

From March 26 to May 7 of 2016, the Wifredo Lam Contemporary Art Center will receive a collective exhibit which curatorial axis is centered in the appropriation of architecture made by more than 50 Cuban contemporary artists from different art expressions and academic years.

With the title La madre de todas las artes (The mother of all arts), as it was known architecture in ancient times, the exhibit highlights the interest of an important zone in Cuban contemporary art for the architectonic aspect, from a minimum detail—a skirting board, a door, a brick, a column, a handful of sand—to a great scale in which a building (house, factory, hotel, movie, school) reaches a higher leading role.

This is not a sum of all those authors that have experienced in the architectonic aspect, because there are many from the 80s to the present: that’s why, due to space reasons and curatorial criteria, we have only distinguished those who have adopted relevant positions towards architecture from the humor, the nostalgic, the critic, irony, the metaphor, to propose us new knowledge and meanings that can re-articulate also considering the desired, the utopic, the sentimental, the absurd viewpoint.

It is an exhibit based in a significant variety of aesthetical speeches and supports that affect the sensitivity and imagination of the creators, concern for validating traditional components of the history of art, architecture and those arising from the new technological means and digitalization.

The exhibit so complements other experiences carried out previously like La caza del éxito (mediations and interferences of kitsch in Cuban houses), at the Visual Arts Development Center during the 11th Havana Biennial (2012) and Señales de vida (industrial and architectonic design by highly qualified Cuban professionals, in 2013 at the Wifredo Lam Center.
