“Misa cubana” by Jose Maria Vitier acclaimed in Ohio

The eagerly awaited concert of Misa Cubana a la Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre (Cuban Mass to Our Lady of Charity), by Jose Maria Vitier took place last April 24 at the Fritsche Theater, Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio. This way, he closed with a spectacular closure the activities that for four weeks were dedicated to promote the works of this composer, who played an extensive program as an Artist-in-Residence at the mentioned institution.

 

The program included a piano concert by José María Vitier and US guest instrumentalists at the Art Museum in the city of Columbus, Ohio; master classes on Cuban music as well as several concerts with the music of this composer for piano, vocal soloists and chamber music with the world premiere of his work Labyrinths for string orchestra.

 

The Misa Cubana was presented with a large number of performers, which included the string section of the Westerville Symphony, outstanding soloists and the unified presence of three choirs of singers that raised the figure to more than 150 voices.

 

The concert had a huge impact on the large audience, which excited urged interpreters, in standing ovations, to return repeatedly to the stage and offer several works of “encore”.

 

The University of Otterbein, on behalf of its students and teachers, took the opportunity to acknowledge the work of José María Vitier during his residence, and highlighted the importance of the results of the institution during the stay of this prominent pianist and composer in this program of studies dedicated to Cuba.
