Cuba’s Academy of History handed Doctor of History and Captain of the Spanish Armada, Juan Antonio Escrigas Rodriguez, the Foreign Correspondent Academician certificate.

The ceremony, held at the main lecture hall of San Geronimo University College of Havana, was chaired by Doctor Eduardo Torres Cuevas, president of the Academy, who read the Letter of Appointment.

The keynote speech was delivered by Doctor Gustavo Placer Cervera, who began by greeting a group of Cuban veteran naval officers and the young sailors and professors of the Spanish Navy.

By praising and extoling the life and work of Doctor Juan Antonio Escrigas Rodriguez, Mr. Placer Cervera explained the reason behind the appointment and pointed out that he is not only a Doctor of Contemporary History and author of books on naval history (such as Illustrated Atlas on the War in Cuba and The Spanish Armada and Photography in Cuba, Puerto Rico and Filipinas), but he also comes from a family of sailors, most of which have been related to this Caribbean island. He has significantly contributed to the historic research between Cuba and Spain with valuable graphic documentation that illustrates the development of naval history between both countries.

Afterwards, Doctor Escrigas, who was visibly overcome by emotion, thanked the decision taken by the Cuban Academy and spoke about the historic relation between his family and this island. Moreover he gave an interesting and revealing presentation, backed up by a series of exclusive and historic pictures taken to the main naval developments between both nations, which caught the eyes of the attendees.

The event was also attended by Pedro Pablo Rodriguez Lopez and Gustavo Placer Cervera, members of the Directive Board of the Academy, and Spain’s ambassador to Cuba, Mr. Juan Francisco Montalvan Carrasco, colonel Jose Maria Pardo de Santallana, Defense attaché of the Embassy, Captain Victoriano Gilabert, Comanding Officer of Training Ship Juan Sebastian Elcano, members of the diplomatic corps, members of the ship’s crew, the Academy, executives, cadets of Cuba’s Navy and other outstanding intellectuals and personalities.
