Malstrom². Museum Junge Kunst Frankfurt/Oder

In the mid-1980s, through the project "MALSTROM, images and figures 1982-1986", the artists Cornelia Schleime, Helge Leiberg, Reinhard Stangl, Ralf Kerbach and Hans Scheib who all had emigrated to the West became known instantly. The exhibition was shown at the Haus am Waldsee in West Berlin, from 13 June to 27 June 1986, and from January 11 to February 8, 1987 in the Mannheimer Kunstverein. It was proof that parallel to the neo-expressionist venture of the West German "Junge Wilde", there were currents in the GDR with a strong ego relation and an unruly attitude, which is not surprising since German expressionism is an all-German category, unfolding its potential to this day. There are long-standing connections between the artists, which have often aroused fruitful cooperation, without the fact that anyone from the inner circle had ever claimed to be part of a group.

Between the exhibition of paintings from 1986/87 and today, 30 years have passed.

Artists, art and art discourse have changed. The current MALSTROM² exhibition presents the artists with previously not or rarely shown works, in juxtaposition to their current art.
