Over 40 Movies to Compete in Gibara Film Festival

More than 40 movies will compete in the 14th Gibara International Film Festival, to be held from July 1 to 7 in that city in the eastern Cuban province of Holguin, according to the organizers.

For this edition, dedicated to children and adolescents, the selection committee chose 25 fiction works between long and short films, 16 documentaries and three animations, with a greater presence of movies from Europe and Latin America.

In a press conference, the president of the event, the actor Jorge Perugorria, highlighted the variety, quality and quantity of the works proposed for the contest, a figure that exceeds those received in previous editions.

Perugorria stressed that although the festival has grown, he expects for future appointments a greater presence of films from Asia and Africa.

The movies 'Sergio and Serguei' (Cuba), 'Bram Fischer' (South Africa-The Netherlands), 'Los modernos' (Uruguay) and the French 'Step by step' are among the fiction feature films.

Titles like '25 hours', 'Al que no le guste que no mire', 'Strangers', and 'Human Thirst' are some of the short films that will be exhibited during the week.

In the documentary section, 'Between a Tango and a Danzon', 'A Calypso Night', and the short films 'Cosplayer' and 'Out & About', among others, are competing.

'She', 'The Two Princes' and 'Pendulum' are the animations competing in the event.

The rest of the festival program includes theoretical spaces, conferences, concerts and exhibitions. A special presentation of the film 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' with the Puerto Rican actor Benicio del Toro, a 20-year-old classic, and where he starred with Johnny Depp, is also confirmed.

Other guests at the festival will be Mexican actor and director Demian Bichir, Spanish filmmaker Felix Viscarret and Cuban actress Ana de Armas.

During the event, the Lucia de Honor award will be presented to three major Cuban Film artists: the filmmaker Enrique Pineda Barnet, and the actors Mirtha Ibarra and Salvador Wood. In addition, a tribute will be paid to the late filmmaker Humberto Solas, Gibara festival's manager.
