Barbados: Caribbean Arts Festival 2017 Opened

Bridgetown.- The 13th edition of the Caribbean Arts Festival (CARIFESTA) was inaugurated in Barbados, with the presence of Irwin La Rocque, secretary general of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

'On ocassion of the celebration of the Caricom 44th anniversary, Carifesta 2017 constitutes a linking force for the member countries,' said La Rocque in the opening gala on Monday night.

La Rocque assured the region has wide perspectives of cultural growth, including 2.6 million dollars for the creation of the Cultural Creative Industrial Innovative Fund, to help the private and public sectors of the member countries withy funds to develop culture.

Stephen Lashley, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport of Barbados called the countries to be working moreover on the regional integration, and urged the participants to mix the contemporary with the authoctonous things to achieve a united Caribbean, politically, economically and socially.

The opening of the Carifiesta 2017 was delayed, because of the step of Tropical Storm Harvey, and in spite of the initial disappointment, the organizers said that Barbados, as a host of the event for the second time since 1981, will produce a wonderful festival.

Carifesta is an event highly valued for bringing the traditions of the area over, and every year shows, since its creation in 1972 in Guyana, the cultural innovations of the participating nations.
