Cuba Hosts 23rd Ibero-American Culture Festival

Holguin, Cuba.- More than 150 artists and intellectuals from 21 countries are participating as of today in the 23rd edition of the Ibero-American Culture Festival, taking place in this eastern Cuban province until October 30.

The participants this year come from Colombia, Spain, Peru, Costa Rica, Argentina, Mexico, Ecuador, Brazil, Venezuela, United States, Dominican Republic, Chile, Canada, Nicaragua, Angola, Congo, Lesotho, Uganda, Cambodia, Iran and Italy.

As in each edition, the event will connect the most diverse artistic expressions: fine arts, dance, film and music, among others, in this province, located about 734 kilometers east of Havana.

The director of the Ibero-American House and president of the organizing committee of the Festival, Eduardo Avila, said in a recent news conference that his event will revolve around 'Local development and cultural industries' as main issue.

Several activities in program will pay tribute to Spanish poet, Miguel Hernandez, on occasion of the 75th anniversary of his death; Ernesto Che Guevara on the 50th anniversary of his fall in combat; and the 525 years of the encounter between two cultures in this continent.

According to Avila, the aims of his entity is to defend what Ibero-America means for Cuba.

The opening of the Iberian Center will have a special guest today: Spanish maestro, Gregorio Gutierrez, leading the Symphonic Orchestra in Holguin, to perform a program composed by works of Manuel de Falla and a fragment of the Concierto de Aranjuez, by Joaquin Rodrigo, among other participants.

The Ibero-American Culture Festival began to be held in Cuba in 1992, based on the growing relations of this Caribbean country with the Latin American nations.

The program includes the 12th Ibero-American Congress of Thought, an Ibero-American Colloquium of Letters, personal and collective fine art exhibitions, a Ibero-American Audiovisual Exhibition, community and socio-cultural animation projects, and a Peasant Party.
