Sofia Tornero: Soulful Stuff

Next week on June 22, Madrid will witness the grand opening of Emergentes, an exhibit by sculptor Sofia Tornero at the Victor i Fills Art Gallery.

Tornero works with different materials, like stone, iron, wood, clay, resin and plaster to come up with pieces full of expressionism, not only based on shapes, but also on colors. She continuously represents human figures that break free from the cube’s geometry into a multitude of sketches. Each and every one of her characters oozes out pent-up moxie.

For this exhibition, Sofia has chosen color blue to give the finishing touches to some of her artworks, a color that –as he says- conveys energy and is the color of the soul. And that’s precisely the title of one of her works which embraces a whole group in which other titles, like Self-determination, Stanchness, Vocation, Privilege and Independence –all abstract nouns- stand out. In a recent interview with Pedro Soler, the artist had this to say: “Those are living words because to me sculptures are forged and cast on a daily basis. I have a need to show, to expose my intimate experiences and pass them on to others. That’s why my sculptures are the meaning of my life.”

Also in the course of that interview, Sofia referred to the meaningful influence of her professors and the significance of the prize she won back in 1998 at the Young Murcia Contest, a turning point that gave her career a big boost. Following this recognition, she was chosen for the Carrere Sculpture Symposium in which she rubbed elbows with 22 sculptors from around the world. Her pieces have been exposed in Tangiers, Cuba, Italy, Mexico and other nations.
