Deadline for arteBA 2012 Ends on Oct. 14

Since its foundation 21 years ago, arteBA Fundación organizes one of the region’s major contemporary art fairs for the promotion of Argentine and Latin American art in markets worldwide. Based in the city of Buenos Aires, arteBA has gone stronger through the years and has put record-breaking turnout numbers over a brief period of time.

The month of October has been set as the deadline for handing in applications for the 2012 edition, whose selection committee is presided over by Laura Batkis, a freelance curator and art critic who was granted a scholarship by the Antorchas Foundation and the National Arts Fund. She’s also served stints as correspondents for a number of publications. Other members are Rodrigo Alonso, a theoretician and expert on contemporary art and new media; Sonia Becce, a member of the CIFO (Cisneros Fontanals Museum, Miami) advisory committee; curator Luisa Duarte and gallery owner Estela Totah.

For the 2012 edition, young gallery owners and artists representing mostly Latin American artists for Barrio Joven –a section that supports different or alternative initiatives that break free from the traditional exhibition and sale models for the contemporary arts. Applicants must represent at least five artists who have presented artworks over the past couple of years. The selection will be in the hands of Akio Aoki, director of the Vermelho Gallery in Sao Pablo, Brazil); Diego Bianchi, an artist based in Argentina’s Buenos Aires, and Eva Grinstein, a freelance curator also from Buenos Aires. The performance + music marathon will once again be held in different locations of the fair.

arteBA has managed to put talented artists on the map and has served as a legitimizing launching pad for young bucks. Even though it was initially conceived as a gallery fair, the event has been redesigned by the addition of new projects with each passing edition. The auditorium program, the prizes, the emerging sector and actions carried out by contributing companies seek to put more moxie into the concept. The 21st edition is slated for May 18-22 next year.
