On the Threshold of the Curitiba Biennial

The sixth edition of the Curitiba Biennial, slated for Sept. 18 thru Nov. 20, is organized by the Parana Art Institute, the University of Parana and the Federal Act for the Advance of Culture, run by Brazil’s Ministry of Culture.

This time around, the event will gather over 70 artists from 35 countries, including delegations from Curacao, Hong Kong, Bosnia, Finland, Guatemala, Zimbabwe and Vietnam, among others. Brazil will be represented by a troupe of 19 artists. With this diversity in tow, the 6th Curitiba Biennial has become one of the South American nation’s main cultural events to be held in 2011.

Developed on the basis of “Mas Alla de la Crisis” (Beyond the Crisis) and curated by Alfons Hug and Ticio Escobar, the biennial involves the entire city with exhibits in major institutions, like the Oscar Niemeyer Museum and lots of public spaces. One of the artists scheduled to perform actions in town is Argentina’s Cristian Segura (1976), who has devised a number of site-specific projects in key points of the city, like the Tiradentes Square and the local Opera House.
