October: The Multiple Art Month in Madrid

The 19th edition of Estampa 2011, a fair specializing in multiple art works will take place in Madrid from October 20 to 23.

Estampa Multiple Art has been held in this Spanish city since 1993, and has become a significant reference for galleries, printers and institutions participating in the collection, distribution and promotion of contemporary art editions. A change of leadership (since November 2010) brought about substantial modifications. Curator Chema de Francisco Guinea –current director– suggested that this year’s fair should highlight, more than ever, before the figure of art collectors as a determining agent in laying the foundations and in the evolution of the art market. He has bet on renovating the Fair’s image and communication means by creating a system of social networks, a new website and new corporate image. The development of the concept of “continuity” has been fundamental as well, because it makes it possible to expand the Fair beyond the four usual days, projecting its actions to other spaces through “Estampa Projects”, an initiative consisting in organizing exhibitions, managing editions, creating publications and promoting forums and discussion series.

This year, Venezuelan Carlos Cruz Diez, one of the most important figures in kinetic and op art will be the guest artist at the fair. The event will feature a broad program for the specialized public, both collectors and art professionals, in the “VIP Collector” and “VIP Professional” sections. Likewise, a forum aimed at spreading out the conclusions of research projects on this field of contemporary art has been organized jointly with the Telefonica Foundation, Pilar i Joan Miró Foundation, the dx5 research group of the University of Vigo, and the Institute of Contemporary Art, all of them under the coordination of Javier Blas.

Emerging artists will also have their space in the section “Temptations 2011”. Karin Ohlenschläger, co-founder and co-director of MediaLabMadrid, is the exhibition’s curator, and she has said the showcase will follow the Multiple Lives concept: “Life in its biological, social, political and cultural dimension is an integral part of art. It is multiple in its dynamics, forms and contexts, but also multiple in its code and language, in its structure, and its relational and interdependent dynamics. And it’s, therefore, multiple also in its discourse, experience and knowledge." Temptations will display 17 projects by Maria Acha Rodriguez, Eugenio Ampudia, Juancho Arregui Lopez, Maria Castellanos Vicente and Alberto Valverde Garcia, Irene de Andres Vega, Democracy: Ivan Lopez and Pablo España, Elena Garcia Jimenez, Juan Jose Lopez Cediel, Angel Masip, Alfredo Morte, Juan F. Navarro Llinares, Maria Platero Escribano, Ranafactory: Raul Campos Lopez and Nacho Belda Mercado, Casilda Sanchez Alonso-Martinez, Daniel Silvo, Jorge Yeregui Tejedor and Juan Zurita Benedicto.
