“Hollywood en Madrid” Exhibition, Excelencias Cultural Space

Hollywood en Madrid exhibition was premiered last Thursday in the Spanish capital, a retrospective of pictures taken by the famous photographer Vicente Ibañez during the 1950s at his studio in Gran Via.

It’s nearly impossible to have looked through any magazine, newspaper or ad without having watched some of his pictures. He was considered a genius, and every star wanted to pose for him, just like his good friend Romy Schneider, or the young Brigitte Bardot.

Although they weren’t best friends, artist Enrique del Pozo knew Ibañez and was interested in producing a documentary film on his life. He spent several days having conversations and walking round Madrid. During the making process, he discovered that Vicente kept his finest works for years, the latest developed by the artist. Enrique del Pozo bought them, so they can be admired at HOLLYWOOD EN MADRID exhibition.

The collection includes portraits of acclaimed movie stars such as Cary Grant, Gary Cooper, Sofia Loren, as well as directors Fellini or Hitchcock. The last one, who was already sick of the press, had said that he would only be photographed if the snap were different. Ibañez fulfilled his expectations and he was finally photographed three times, one of them at the graveyard of Almudena. So, along with studio pictures, there are some external snapshots that tell different curious anecdotes. Tyrone Power’s is one of them: while he was photographed by Ibañez at the Plaza de España a gypsy tried to sell a lottery ticket with 13 as the last number. Power said no, because it was bad luck, and bought another number, but fate forced his death the day after, it was a heart attack during the shooting.

This exhibition pays tribute to one of the finest photographers in history, unfairly forgotten in our country. The showcase is not only an opportunity to admire unpublished portraits of movie stars, but buying them at excellent prices.
