Argentinean David Lamelas at Galeria Ignacio Liprandi

Señalamientos, David Lamelas’ solo show, is going to be open to the public through September 2012, at Buenos Aires-based gallery Ignacio Liprandi. Installations and watercolors, connected to previous practices carried out by Lamelas –including pictures that reflect actions from the 1960s–, speak of the space within and around objects.

Since late 1960s, Lamelas (Buenos Aires, 1946), a graduated sculptor, has explored the art-idea or conceptual art from the movies, photography, performance or site-specific installations, in reflections that connect him to the surrounding environment, and he mildly modifies. During those years, he was one of the main representatives of Instituto Di Tella and, in 1968, he moved to London for a British Council scholarship, where his passion for short films came to life. In 1967, he received the San Pablo Biennial Prize; and in 1968 he participated in the 34 Venice Biennial. So his career was marked by an international projection since the very beginning.

So far, Lamelas has lived and worked all over Europe and United States, and every site he visits exerts significant influence on his work, but specially signs the constant experience of space re-localization, the possibility to assimilate and understand new cultures. That’s the reason why his conceptualism lacks of the coldness of many of his colleagues, always printing humorous winks on his proposals.

The palm tree turns out to be a central element in this exhibition. Attracted by its unusual and different shapes, Lamelas, tackles the uncomfortable and nearly-human feature of the tree-gravity relation, and emphasizes this characteristic in his installation, showcased along with his sketches.
