Four Exhibitions at Agora Gallery, New York

Masters of the Imagination: The Latin American Fine Art Exhibition, at Agora Gallery, New York, is showcasing the work of ten artists from different countries, most of them come from Latin American: Maria Eugenia Akel (Chile), Nelida Diaz de D'Amato (Argentina), Yolanda Eljaiek (Colombia), Adriana Escobar (Colombia), Bruno Falcão (Brazil), Maria Gomez Ponti (Argentina), Octavio Guinart (Cuba) and Mariza Sanchez (Mexico), along with Spanish Carmen Sotuela and Italian Enzo Trapani. The exhibition was inaugurated in September 15, although the official opening ceremony took place on September 20.

The presence of Carmen Sotuela’s work stands out. Carmen comes from northern Spain and found her inspiration in the chromatic richness of the landscape in that area. Her work features an intense botanical influence and tries to establish parallels between human emotions and the volubility of flowers. Her oil paintings fluctuate between naturalism and symbolism. Sotuela borrows formal solutions from the traditional landscape and applies them on her country scenes, although each artwork contains a lot of details. So, from the apparent composite serenity, the sceneries are truly complex in terms of deconstruction and reading, almost fantastic, of “high engineering”. The presence of human figures on these pieces implies deep metaphoric sense, which turns out to be evident in the expressions of faces and bodies.

This fall, Agora Gallery promotes another three events, two of which are collective exhibitions: In Reverie of Form (Otto Boron, Donatella Colasanti, Pia Descamps, Iva Milanova, Nicolò Orsi Battaglini, Donna Serio and Sylvie Vermandel) vouches for the talent and energy of contemporary art; Elements of Abstraction (Wendy Cohen, Gail Edmonds, Andy Fullalove, Katrina Howarth, Heidi Kirschner, Regina Loch-Elvert, Lee Savage and Cordell Taylor) explores the endless world of shapes and lines; while Weaving the Rainbow is a solo show carried out by Amerindian Sudnya Shroff.

Agora Gallery was created in 1984 and is located in the gallery district of Chelsea, New York. Beyond holding an all-year-long intense exhibition schedule, the gallery publishes ARTisSpectrum, a biannual magazine on contemporary art.
