Another for Carlos Cruz-Diez

MAPFRE Foundation, which honors the drawing career of a living artist by delivering the Penagos Prize, gave this annual award to Venezuelan Carlos Cruz-Diez.

The prize, created in 1982 to pay tribute to famous draftsman Rafael de Penagos (Madrid, 1889-1954), who is considered the most important representative of the renovation movement that shook Spanish graphic illustration during the 1920s and 1930s, has been handed to some of the most outstanding artist from the contemporary panorama.

The panel of judges was made up of Alberto Manzano Martos (President of MAPFRE Foundation), Pablo Jimenez Burillo (Director General of the Culture Institute), Francisco Calvo Serraller, Eugenio Carmona Matos, Juan Fernandez-Layos Rubio, Julian Grau Santos, Leandro Navarro Ungria, Estrella de Diego and Maria Dolores Jimenez Blanco.

Carlos Cruz-Diez (Caracas, 1923) has lived and worked in Paris since 1960. His first artistic steps are linked to the Kinetic Movement from the 1950s and 1960s. The development of his visual reflection has modified the notions on color perception in art, since its conception is taken as an autonomous reality, devoid of anecdotes, which evolves in real time and space without the shape. His pieces are showcased with the most remarkable collections of the world: MoMA in New York, London’s Tate Modern, Georges Pompidou Center in Paris and the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville in Paris, among others.
