Contemporary Art and Classics

Barcelona’s Godia Foundation has been showcasing since the beginning of the month an exhibition that combines classic pieces treasured by Museo del Prado and contemporary artworks, in order to prove the “non-existence of frontiers between yesterday and today" and that "good artists not only love and look for the same things, but they understand each other because the use the same language."

With the curatorship of Art History professor Francisco Calvo Serraller, the exhibition gathers fifty artworks created by twenty-four Spanish artists from different generations, and it will be open to the public through May 13. Pieces of contemporary creators such a Miquel Barcelo, Eduardo Chillida, Luis Gordillo, Andreu Alfaro, Cristina Garcia Rodero and Ouka Leele coexist in the halls of the Foundation with canvas signed by Goya and Velazquez. Most of the connections are direct, but it is subtle in some cases.

The tour proposed by the showcase includes two cycles of lectures organized in 1991 and 2007 by Fundacion de Amigos del Museo del Prado. The artists that make up the exhibition were asked to present four graphic works, with the same size, which had come out of the personal inspiration of their memories or visit to Museo del Prado. Both initiatives have come together at Godia Foundation.
