Carlos Navarro Reviews in Lima the History, Creative World of Music Video clip

Many people believe that 1975 was a key year to the history of music. Queen band launched its Bohemian Rhapsody, along with its video clip, probably the first one in the history as such. Years later, in 1983, Michael Jackson and his acclaimed Thriller cleared the way for video clip as a concept and complementary industry to music edition. Ever since, and initially thanks to the MTV that tried to illustrate each single with an audiovisual support, the video clip has become undoubtedly respected.

This discipline must be framed within the visual arts and, in some cases, within the avant-garde, since it coexists with certain commercial and functional aspects that can’t be put aside, just like the need to sell a song, band or singer.

It’s amazing how some of the improvements in terms visual staging in some artistic expression, such as the movies, were originally created and tested in the video clip world. We could even say that narrative rhythm of video clip has set rules among viewers. Likewise, it’s important to highlight it obvious imbrication with the advertising language.

This display pays attention to an essential narrative to understand visual arts of the 21st century, where the thin frontier between video clip and video creation plays a necessary role.

eCLIPSe, an exhibition curated by Carlos Navarro and showcased at Espacio Fundación Telefónica, Lima, goes over the creative world of video clip with a selection of 50 that, throughout the history, can be described as key elements to understand this discipline. “These are not all of them … but these are what we have”. The video clips are organized as a historic tour, complemented with works created by two of the most outstanding video clip producers: French Michel Gondry and British Chris Cunningham.

Participating artists:

Robert Abel; Jonas Akerlund; Kevin Altieri; Steve Barron; Toni Basil; David Bowie; David Byrne; Jim B

The show was inaugurated on October 24 and is going to be opened through January 12, 2014.
