CA2M Dos de Mayo Art Center in the community of Madrid, located in Mostoles, will be the venue of choice in 2015 of the ARCO Foundation Collection, according to a decision made by IFEMA Executive Committee, the owner of the collection that has been lodged at the Centro Gallego de Arte Contemporáneo (CGAC, Santiago de Compostela) since 1996.
In 2013, the Madrid Community started negotiations with IFEMA to bring that collection back to the Spanish capital. It’s made up of 300 artworks by 224 authors who have played key roles in the contemporary arts, mostly among all major trends from the second half of the 20th century to date.
CA2M will also harbor the Madrid Community’s Contemporary Art Collection, consisting of over 1,500 pieces that, like the ARCO Collection, came into being in the 1990s. According to the Madrid-based cultural promoters, this effort is fostering discourses and synergies between the two collections that put a different artistic spin on the community.
The idea is to have the collection installed in the Spanish capital for the upcoming edition of ARCOMadrid for the public to visit it.
The ARCO Foundation started out its own collection back in 1987 with artworks acquired during the Fair, in a bid to help develop and advance national and international contemporary arts, and set an example for other institutions when it comes to purchasing works at ARCOMadrid. With that view in mind, they have relied on the support of such prestigious artists as Edy de Wilde, Gloria Moure, Jan Debbaut, Dan Cameron, Iwona Blazwick, María de Corral, Chus Martínez, Sabine Brietwiesser, José Guirao, Miguel von Hafe, Ferrán Barenblit, Glòria Picazo, Yolanda Romero and Taru Elfving.
