Oswaldo Vigas 1943-2013. An anthological exhibition

A selection of the most outstanding works of the Venezuelan artist Oswaldo Vigas will be touring the American continent over the next three years. The travelling exhibition will start at the Lima Museum of Contemporary Art -MAC- from October 9 to December 7, and then it will be presented at the Chilean Museum of Fine Arts –MNBA- in Santiago, from January 15 to March 15. This exhibition will be going to cities such as Bogotá, Buenos Aires, São Paulo, Mexico City, Panama City, and some others cities in the United States.

Oswaldo Vigas 1943-2013 is a show of 70 paintings and 6 sculptures, curated by Bélgica Rodriguez, that represent an important selection of the Master’s work from his beginnings until 2013. Vigas’ work stands out along his entire career by its deep sense of belonging to the American continent. This is expressed through images of cosmogonical character that refer to both nature (mineral, vegetable and animal elements) and the female figure, which is mythically linked to the earth and to the origin of life.

Vigas is one of the most recognized Venezuelan visual artists in his country and abroad. He is considered a pioneer of Latin American art, with artists like Szyszlo, Lam, Matta, Tamayo, or Guayasamín. His work, made between France and Venezuela, is an original synthesis of the cultural roots of Latin America and the latest plastic trends of modernity.

Vigas continued to work on his artistic activity until the day he died, on April 22, 2014. The Oswaldo Vigas Foundation, created when the Master was still alive, currently works on the edition of an anthological publication containing much of his prolific production while preparing the Oswaldo Vigas 1943-2013 exhibition, which will be arriving to Chilean Museum of Fine Arts –MNBA- in Santiago, from January 15 to March 15, curated by Bélgica Rodríguez, a specialist in Oswaldo Vigas’ work in Venezuela.
