Rafael Trobat in Barjola Museum, "Here, along the water. Nicaragua "

The exhibition can be visited until January 11, 2015 in Barjola Museum offers eighty pictures of Nicaragua where Rafael Trobat photographer has caught the eyes of the people after the end of the revolutionary period. Each of his pictures reflect the intense personality of its protagonists. Trobat shows critically, human and documentary immense social wealth, personal and cultural at a key moment in the history of the Central American country: the end of the Sandinista Revolution and the beginning of a transition, the author uses as a backdrop background for a portrait of Nicaraguan society.

 

"Here along the water. Nicaragua "is a photographic project developed by Rafael Trobat. Started in 1990, after more than 18 years of work, was published in 2009 by Lunwerg Editors. The book, which was a finalist in the fifteenth edition of "Leica European Publishers Award for Photography" (London, 2008) and selected by the PhotoEspaña festival among the best photography books of the year, contains 160 images of the author and includes texts by Christian Caujolle Tania Montenegro and Alejandro Castellote.

 

The exhibition, produced by the Andalusian Centre of Photography, consists of a selection of eighty large format images, which, as stated by Alejandro Castellote, curator of the exhibition, "Trobat displays a knowing look toward a village powerful personality that celebrates life over the numerous conflicts and natural disasters that have accompanied its recent history ".

 

According to Chema Conesa, photographer, editor and curator, Trobat offers "a vision of the country fascinated fraught with emotion and empathy, with a touch of surreal tear, where the characters are unaware actors of a stage, sometimes tragic, sometimes festive, composed strictly random situation, in which the constancy of work achieved levels of opportunity and impeccable credibility documentary. "

 

The title of the work, here, by the water, one of the possible meanings of the country name in Nahuatl Indian language, refers to the importance of water in geography, history and Nicaraguan identity and reveals the author's wish to provide a narrative from within.

 

For the French critic and curator Christian Caujolle, the work of Rafael Trobat on Nicaragua, "beautiful in form and devoid of sensationalism" forms "a deep story, dense, committed and bright."

 

In the words of Castellote, the work of Trobat "is inscribed in the wake of the great humanist photographers and has established itself as one of the most honest and vibrant the Spanish documentary. In essence, his photographs aspire to transcend the stage and local issues: Rafael Trobat the underlying theme throughout his work is life, taking the world stage and the human being as protagonist ".

 

Rafael Trobat Bernier was born in Córdoba in 1965. He holds a PhD in Fine Arts from the Complutense University of Madrid. You graduate specializing in painting, in 1988 starts in photography. In 1990 first traveled to Nicaragua, starting a long term project on the daily life of the country and its evolution after the end of the revolutionary period, which was published in 2009 by Lunwerg Editors title here by the water. His training as a photographer is developed by Cristina García Rodero, with whom he maintained a close professional relationship for over 15 years. Parallel makes photographic work for different media and national and international institutions.

 

In 1994 he was honored by the Banesto Banesto Foundation Scholarship for Artistic Creation and in 1996 he was selected by World Press Photo to participate in its Masterclass in Rotterdam, Netherlands. In 1988 he received the Fellowship Fotopres La Caixa Foundation and is awarded by the Caja Madrid Foundation.

 

In 2013 Factory edited volume PhotoBolsillo collection dedicated to Rafael Trobat. His work has recently been published and reviewed, among others, in books Stand by 012. Barcelona, ??2012) Spanish Contemporary Art 1992-2013 (The Factory. Madrid. 2013), Spain through Photography 1839- 2010 (Taurus. Madrid, 2013) and Dictionary of Spanish Photographers ( The Factory. Madrid, 2014).

 

He has participated in projects exhibited in prestigious art centers such as the Reina Sofia Museum, Fundación La Caixa, Casa de America, Mapfre Foundation and the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid, projects that have traveled the world in the hands of institutions like the Institute Cervantes or the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation.

 

His photographs, which are part of recognized public and private collections have been published and exhibited in numerous countries in Europe, Asia and America.

 

Currently, besides working as a freelance photographer, he teaches photography at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Complutense University of Madrid.
