The Queen visited the Kunstmuseum Basel exhibition at the Reina Sofía

Doña Letizia presided over the inauguration of the two important samples are from the public collection of Kunstmuseum Basel and two of the major private collections which also houses the Swiss Centre: Rudolf Staechelin Collection and Im Obersteg Collection.

 

In his tour of the exhibition, "Collecting and Modernity. Collections Im Obersteg and Rudolf Staechelin "Queen was accompanied by representatives of the collections Im Obersteg and Rudolf Staechelin, Mathias and Adriana Hagemann Hagemann, head of Collections area of ??Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Rosario Peiro; the curator of the exhibition, Henriette Mentha, and exhibition coordinator, Maria de Prada, besides the Director of the Museum, Manuel Borja-Villel, President of the Board of Reina Sofia, Guillermo de la Dehesa and Secretary of State, José María Lasalle.

 

The result of collaboration between the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia and the Kunstmuseum Basel, the public can see between 18 March and 14 September a selection of modern and contemporary art from the public collection of the Kunstmuseum Basel and two major private collections which also houses the Swiss Centre: Rudolf Staechelin Collection and Collection Im Obersteg, coinciding with the closure of the museum for the renovation of its facilities.

 

The artistic collection of this Swiss institution is considered one of the largest in the world and some of the works traveling to Madrid come first in Switzerland. The exhibitions are supported by the Community of Madrid and the Abertis Foundation.

 

The first one, "White Fire. The modern collection of Kunstmuseum Basel ", is a selection of public collection, which can be seen on the first floor of the building Sabatini Reina Sofia Museum and consists of 106 works (paintings, sculptures, collages, photographs and videos) covering since the late nineteenth century to the present. Will be represented, among many other renowned artists, Edvard Munch, Wassily Kandinsky, Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, Fernand Léger, Georges Braque, Le Corbusier, Dubuffet, Alberto Giacometti, Yves Tanguy, Hans Arp, André Masson, Max Ernst, Paul Klee, Piet Mondrian, László Moholy-Nagy, Gerhard Richter, Mark Rothko, Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol, Francis Picabia or Steve McQueen.

 

The second sample is "Collectibles and Modernity. Two study cases: Collections Im Obersteg and Rudolf Staechelin ", which is noteworthy that the first time set out together outside of Basel. Some 60 paintings that will be exhibited in the fourth building Sabatini plant, provide the only opportunity to see in Madrid acknowledged masterpieces that have never been exhibited in Spain by artists like Gauguin, Van Gogh, Renoir, Redon, Pissarro, Picasso, Manet , Modigliani, Monet, Cézanne, Chagall, Soutine, Jawlensky or Hodler.

 

Among the pieces that will be present in this sample is "Nafea Faa Ipoipo" (When did you marry?), An oil painting by Paul Gauguin, dating from 1892, which was recently acquired by the Qatar Museums Authority to Swiss collector Rudolf Stechelin over 300 million.

 

"Nafea Faa Ipoipo" will join the show in the first days of July. It will be a unique opportunity to see this picture considered one of the best French artist (Paris, 1848 Atuona, French Polynesia, 1903), as from 2016 will be part of the art collections of Qatar.
