Presence of Vigia Editions in U.S. Institutions Highlighted

Matanzas, Cuba.- The presence of the artistic production of Vigia Editions (Ediciones Vigia) in U.S. institutions was the focus of the panel “Caminos de ida y vuelta” held on Monday in this city during the festival for the 30th anniversary of the publishing house.

Linda Howe, a professor at Wake Forest University in North Carolina; Damaris Puñales, a professor at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio, and Jorge Fornet, director of the Casa de las Americas literary research center, were in the panel.

Howe showed photographs showing the work of the Cuban publishing house on display in U.S. museums and universities as a result of the over 20 year project, by way of which the northern nation spreads the creative work of the unusual publishing house.

The professor thanked Vigia for the possibility of making her yet another worker, because the books of this organization are capable of reflecting human values ??and today maintain the same spirit of adventure it had three decades ago when the publishing house was created.

She reminded the many persons attending the panel that Vigia, with its various collections, maintains a permanent presence in the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York, visited by more than two million people every year.

In an exclusive interview with ACN, Damaris Puñales said that Matanzas is part of her human and cultural DNA and that Vigia contributes to her growth as a person, so since she began teaching outside Cuba her goal was always to create a bridge between the students and the culture of her country of origin.

Puñales asserted that it is essential that her students take an interest in the publishing house and in Cuban culture in general. It was difficult at first but now the program flows positively and increasingly more young people express their interest.

The Ediciones Vigia Festival will run until April 30 and includes other spaces for debate, book presentations, poetry readings and cultural shows.
