A gift in May: Arte para Mamá Crafts Fair

By: Susana Méndez

As usual, the Cuban Fund of Cultural Assets (in Spanish, FCBC) will give a present to Cuban mothers with the Arte para Mamá Crafts Fair as a tribute to this day dedicated to them on the second Sunday of May.

The Fair will open its doors on May 7 at 11 am, in Pabexpo in rooms A, B and C, and it will end on May 27. Here, Cubans will have the opportunity of buying shoes, footwear, furniture, leather goods, jewelry, textile garments of all kinds, handicrafts made of different materials, ceramic, glass and metal pieces, and art reproductions that will be exhibited on nineteen institutional stands, and 261 by individual artists and craftsmen, which will represent all Cuban provinces.

At a press conference held at the Casa del Alba Cultural in Havana, Jorge Alfonso García, director of the FCBC, and Mercy Correa, director of the National Crafts Center in this institution, agreed that one of the distinguishing features of the event is the high quality of the cultural products that will be exhibited there for their further sale.

Meanwhile, Garcia especially stressed the presence fair of a group of projects at the fair that will ensure the replacement of imports to other entities of the nation, and they will show the potentialities of Cuban artists, with products such as shoes, clothes for work, and materials for restoration, among others.

As in previous editions, companies like ICAIC Artex S.A, EGREM, Génesis art galleries, the National Book Distributor, the Provincial Book Center—all of them attached to the Ministry of Culture—as well as Quitrín and Coral Negro, will exhibit their product lines.

It was also announced that a set of side activities have been conceived, which include a meeting with potters, the call to the National Ceramics Contest and to the International Call of FIART 2015, as well as the presentation of the Arte en la Rampa 2015 project.

The Arte para Mamá National Crafts Fair will be open every day, except on Mothers' Day, from 11 am to 7 pm.
