NYC doctors' collection of modern and contemporary art going to auction

NEW YORK — A collection of modern and contemporary art assembled by two New York City doctors is going on the auction block.

Christie's expects the 160 works to exceed $11 million. They'll be offered over four sales in November and next year.

Highlights include works by Alexander Archipenko, John Chamberlain and Henry Moore. They're going on view Saturday.

Drs. Herbert Kayden and Gabrielle Reem, who were married, acquired many of the works directly from the artists.

Christie's says they developed close friendships with many of artists.

After his wife died in 2011, Kayden donated about 60 works by Jacob Lawrence in her memory to Stanford University's Cantor Arts Center.

Kayden, who died in 2014, was a cardiologist and professor at NYU's Langone Medical Center.

Reem was a professor of pharmacology at NYU.
