Rick Swig: a lover of Cuban culture

By: Adalys Pérez

As a fruit of his several trips to Cuba and the relationship he has established with many of our most prestigious artists is the photographic exhibition by US Rick Swig (1951), recently opened in the gallery of Havana’s Fresa y Chocolate Cultural Center.

Pasión por Cuba is the title of this exhibit that gathers 70 color images captured from 2000 to 2015, which were selected from a collection—of more than 10 thousand—he has been gathering since 1995 when he started to come to the Caribbean island.

Chucho Valdes, Ernán Lopez Nussa, Bobby Carcasses and Alexis Leyva (Kcho) are some of the personalities that appear in this first exhibition presented in Cuba.

Swig works in hotel business in San Francisco, California, and there he has also promoted and presented young and valuable figures of our music like Harold Lopez Nussa and Rolando Luna.

As he said in the opening, to take photographs of our artists has been the way to thank them for having shared his friendship and moments of creation. It is also the way to express the admiration he feels for the rich culture and sensitivity of the Cuban people.

The exhibition is scheduled to be presented in Teodoro Ramos art gallery, in Cerro municipality next June.
