Wifredo Lam’s work at the Latin America memorial in Sao Paulo

The Latin America Memorial in Sao Paulo, Brazil, holds the exhibit Wifredo Lam: El espíritu de la creación since last March 24. It is a retrospective of the work of the most universal Cuban artist, who has a place in the surrealist movement and artistic links with Picasso, Bretton and other greats from his time.

His masterpiece La jungla (1943), acquired by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) of New York, was the opening door and called the attention on the art made in Latin America at that moment. Wifredo Lam’s work is a synthesis of the cultural mix of the Caribbean, of which he was one of its greatest exponents.

The exhibition includes works during the 1930s to the 1970s with paintings and important engravings, like Mujer sentada, El Gallo del Caribe, Figura equine, and a collection of more than 80 works coming from Cuba’s National Museum of Fine Arts which will run until May 1.
